Ingredients:
For the meatballs:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 egg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)
For the sauce:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Meatballs:
- In a large bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let it sit for a few minutes until the breadcrumbs soak up the milk.
- Add the ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper to the breadcrumb mixture. Mix everything together until well combined.
- Form the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
- Cook the Meatballs:
- In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the meatballs to the skillet in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook the meatballs until they are browned on all sides and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside.
- Make the Sauce:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the flour to the skillet and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes, until the mixture turns golden brown.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth, making sure to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
- Stir in the heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
- Combine Meatballs and Sauce:
- Return the cooked meatballs to the skillet, making sure they are well coated with the sauce.
- Simmer the meatballs in the sauce for an additional 5-10 minutes, until they are heated through and the flavors meld together.
- Serve:
- Serve the Swedish meatballs hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
- They are traditionally served with mashed potatoes or egg noodles, and lingonberry sauce on the side.
Enjoy your delicious homemade Swedish meatballs!
