Swedish Meatballs Recipe

Ingredients:

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)

For the sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meatballs:
    • In a large bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let it sit for a few minutes until the breadcrumbs soak up the milk.
    • Add the ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper to the breadcrumb mixture. Mix everything together until well combined.
    • Form the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  2. Cook the Meatballs:
    • In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the meatballs to the skillet in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook the meatballs until they are browned on all sides and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside.
  3. Make the Sauce:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Add the flour to the skillet and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes, until the mixture turns golden brown.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, making sure to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
    • Stir in the heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Combine Meatballs and Sauce:
    • Return the cooked meatballs to the skillet, making sure they are well coated with the sauce.
    • Simmer the meatballs in the sauce for an additional 5-10 minutes, until they are heated through and the flavors meld together.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the Swedish meatballs hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
    • They are traditionally served with mashed potatoes or egg noodles, and lingonberry sauce on the side.

Enjoy your delicious homemade Swedish meatballs!
